Our Story

We’re Maike & Niels - The Scuba Couple - and our story began in 2009, when a long-distance relationship turned into a shared life full of adventure. After seven years of train rides and weekend visits between cities, we got married, settled down in Munich and started “normal” careers in engineering and marketing.

But something was always calling us: the open road, new cultures and especially the ocean. A spontaneous Open Water course during a trip to Mexico changed everything. From the moment we took our first breath underwater, we were hooked. Scuba diving became more than a hobby - it became the beginning of a whole new life. 

Just 18 months later, we quit our jobs, packed our backpacks and began a global journey - not just to explore, but to dive. From Central America to the Andes, from Carnival in Rio to thresher sharks in the Philippines, we followed the currents, collecting not only dive certifications, but unforgettable moments.

We became Divemasters on Malapascua, Philippines just before the pandemic hit, forcing us back to Germany. When borders reopened, we became Scuba Instructors on Gili Trawangan, Indonesia. With few tourists and a tight-knit dive community, we sharpened our skills before heading to Egypt to work for one of the Red Sea’s top dive centers. For over a year, we guided and taught in some of the world’s richest waters.

Eventually, we returned to Gili T, a place that had captured our hearts. After another amazing year teaching divers there, our next chapter took us to a tiny island in the Maldives, where we managed a full dive center operation - from teaching and guiding to office, maintenance and logistics. It was tough, remote and incredible. We learned what it really takes to run a dive business in one of the most breathtaking environments on Earth.

After three intense years in the industry, we felt it was time for something new. Still in love with diving, we were looking for more freedom, creativity and purpose. So we started our own platform to support fellow divers. Through helpful scuba guides, dive travel tips and personal stories, we now share everything we've learned - from how to plan the perfect dive trip, to discovering epic dive spots and understanding local seasons.

Today, we’re based (once again!) on our beloved Gili Trawangan, fully dedicated to our mission: helping you explore the underwater world with confidence, curiosity and excitement. Whether you’re a new diver or a seasoned traveler, we’re here to inspire your next big dive adventure.
